Steven Sommerfeld

Steven James Sommerfeld, 22, of Grants Pass died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland after a long battle with leukemia. A service of thanksgiving and memorial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at River Valley Community Church, with Mark Sumpter, pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church, officiating. He was born April 19, 1988, in Grants Pass to Curtis and Sharie Sommerfeld. He was home-schooled and graduated from high school in 2005. In 2007, he earned an associate's degree from Rogue Community College. He graduated summa cum laude from Southern Oregon University in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He worked as a barista at the SOU coffee shop, where he met his fiancee. After graduating, he joined Ashland Partners as an accountant. He was a Christian and a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. He also was a fan of the Green Bay Packers football team. He enjoyed ultimate Frisbee, judo, running and doing other activities with his friends. He also enjoyed traveling to distant locales, especially his Make-A-Wish cruise to the Caribbean. Survivors include his parents; a sister, Betsy of Tampa, Fla.; his fiance, Brittany Seibert of Medford; and his grandparents, Terri Sommerfeld of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ralph and Carol Swanson of Grants Pass. His grandfather, Charles Sommerfeld, died before him.
