Sara Jeanne Smart

Sara Jeanne Smart, 85, of Grants Pass died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at Autumn House. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Stephens Family Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.stephensfc.com. Smart was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Charleroi, Pa., to Fred and Elsie Childress. After high school, she served in the Navy during World War II from Feb. 9, 1943, until her honorable discharge on Feb. 5, 1946. On Feb. 12, 1946, in Norfolk, Va., she married James Lawrence Smart Jr., who died Jan. 11, 2001. For 17 years, she worked for Mendocino County in Ukiah, Calif. She moved to Grants Pass in 2002 from Ukiah. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint and swimming. She also enjoyed shopping, especially for shoes. Survivors include a son, James Smart of Benton Hot Springs, Calif.; two daughters, Cindy Gander of Grants Pass, and Sara Gifford of Fennville, Mich.; a brother, Jack Childress of Provo, Utah; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
