Sammy Harold Nelson Jr, born on May 11, 1958, in Astoria, Oregon, passed away on November 4, 2024, in Grants Pass, Oregon. He was a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Warmth and kindness touched the lives of those around him.
Sammy spent his early years in Bend, McMinnville, and Sweet Home, where he graduated from high school. His dedication to serving his country led him to become a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, eventually transitioning to the Navy after high school. He completed boot camp in San Diego, and proudly served on the USS South Carolina as a fire control technician during his six-year career.
Following his military service, Sammy returned to civilian life, settling in Bend. He began working at a local mill before joining Loram Railroad, where he progressed from grinder to supervisor. After retiring from the railroad, Sammy relocated to Grants Pass, where he enjoyed a fulfilling life of completing odd jobs for friends, further showcasing his helpful nature.
Sammy was a person of diverse interests, indulging in hobbies that ranged from model rockets and parachuting to camping, fishing, and BBQing. His gentle spirit and willingness to lend a hand made him a cherished neighbor and friend.
He is survived by his sister Debbie and her family, his brother David and his family, Aunt Janet, Uncle Chris, as well as Cousins Warren and Wayne and their families.
Sammy was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Nelson Sr, his mother, Carol Nelson, his grandparents, and a number of aunts and uncles. His legacy of kindness and the cherished memories shared with family and friends will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who knew him.
