Margaret âPeggyâ Stafsholt, 92 of Grants Pass passed away Thursday, October 22, 2009 at her home. Private family services. Margaret "Peggy" Stafsholt born Dec.8, 1916 as Margaret Landmesser in Morgantown West Virginia, second of four children in a coal minerâs family. Went to NYC at age 18, where she fell in love with the New York jazz scene of the thirties and forties. Later met and married A.E. Stafsholt and the couple had a child Edward. She worked there as a telephone operator. In 1957 they divorced and she moved west with her son. They landed in Grants Pass (via California,) in 1959, where she operated the Alibi Cafe in the Alibi Tavern. She later owned and operated the White Cabin Cafe during the 1960s, where many friends and customers can attest to her outspoken views in championing the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement. During the 1970s she worked for the Hong Kong Cafe, the Redwoods Motel, and the Economy Market. Later in life she was employed thru the Green Thumb program at the Josephine County Library as a bookbinder, and often described this work as the most enjoyable of her life. Peggy was a frequent donor to many many charitable organizations, and wishes contributions be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, PO box 1510, Ranson WV 25438-4510, or locally to the library and Lovejoy Hospice, the latter of which gave her wonderful care in her last year. Peggy is survived by her son Ed and grandchildren Kristen Marie Stafsholt and Casey Jordan Vance Stafsholt.
