Miklos Laszlo Kallo

February 1, 1938 — May 12, 2023

Coos Bay

Miklos “ Nick” Laszlo Kallo of Coos Bay, OR, age 85, passed away on Friday May 12, 2023 at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass, OR.

He was born in Novaj, Hungary to Sandor Kalo and Terez Kutas and grew up in Budapest.  Miklos fled his home during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.  He left on foot to Austria with only the clothes on his back, a fact which later in life he carried with pride.  He was recognized as a refugee and lived for a short period of time in Italy where he joined the United States Army where he served honorably for twenty years.

Miklos married Paulette Archambault in Ft. Knox, KY in March of 1966. Together they had two children: Joseph, Benjamin.

After retiring from the Army in 1977, he entered a career in the hospitality industry with positions such as the manager at the American Legion Post 591 Seaside, CA, and  manager of the Officer’s Club at Redstone Arsenal Huntsville, Alabama.  Miklos enjoyed making people feel welcome and leaving happy and well fed.   When not working, he joined projects around the house, gardening, and bird watching.

Miklos was preceded in death by Anita Kallo Ray, his daughter from a previous marriage, his father Sandor Kalo, mother Terez Kutas, and his brother Sandor Kalo.

Miklos is survived by his wife, Paulette Kallo, his two sons, Joseph Kallo (Allison), Benjamin Kallo (Melissa), and Miklos Frank Kallo as well as three grandchildren  Eleanor Lucette Kallo, William Miklos Kallo, and Madeleine Lee Kallo.

Miklos lived a unique life where the chaos that forced him to leave Hungary provided opportunity to much of the world and meet people of all backgrounds.  Although he had little formal education, Miklos was intelligent and prided himself on hard work and understanding people.
