Melvin was raised on a family farm on the outskirts of East St. Louis, where he cultivated a deep connection to nature and a strong work ethic. He graduated from Assumption High School in 1954, after which he started working in the grocery business in Illinois. In pursuit of new opportunities, he relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he transitioned into a dedicated trucking dock worker. Melvin later lived in Citrus Heights, California, before retiring in the scenic surroundings of Grants Pass, Oregon.

On October 13, 1956, Melvin married his beloved wife, Louise Frances, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in East St. Louis, a union marked by love and devotion that lasted through the decades. Melvin's faith as a Roman Catholic was a cornerstone of his life.

Melvin had a passion for fishing, gardening, and caring for animals, often sharing these pursuits with his faithful dog. He actively contributed to his community as a volunteer at Wildlife Images and Howling Acres Wolf Sanctuary, demonstrating his commitment to the welfare of animals and the environment.

Melvin is survived by his loving spouse, Louise Frances Holdener; his son, Timothy Holdener; and his grandchildren; Zachary and Elizabeth Biegel. He is preceded in death by his parents; Melchior and Clara Holdener; his siblings, Bernard Holdener and Rita O'Donnell; and his daughter, Teresa Biegel.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 12pm, with an invitation extended to all who knew and loved him.
