With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Larry E. Hanlon, our cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Larry left us on January 7, 2025, from a service-connected illness, surrounded by his family. Born on a rainy day in Corvallis, Oregon, on January 30, 1951, Larry lived a life rich with adventure, purpose, and love.
A proud Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Larry served his country with honor and bravery as a helicopter pilot. His heroism even extended outside of the military—he was always the first to rush to the aid of an injured person or stop to save a wounded animal. Many of those he touched in this way returned to visit him in subsequent years.
His charismatic personality and infectious smile left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Larry had a magnetic presence that could command a room, captivating everyone with his stories and charm. His humor was legendary; he could make anyone laugh with a well-timed joke or a hilarious story from his many adventures. His laughter was genuinely contagious.
Throughout his diverse career, Larry worked in all aspects of the general aviation industry, ventured into real estate and auto sales, and even served as a firefighter. His dedication and hard work were evident in every role he embarked on.
Larry had an extraordinary eye for color. For decades, he meticulously filled the pages of countless books with his cherished gel pens. He enjoyed submarine and western movies, as well as TV shows like "Jeopardy," "Deadliest Catch," and "Gold Rush." Additionally, Larry was passionate about automotive auctions, especially Barrett-Jackson and Mecum. Simply spending the day in his workshop, organizing his tools, brought him immense joy.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Kerry; his loving daughter, Diana; his son-in-law, Rob; grandson, Jordan Justice; stepson, Brandon, and his wife, Kelly; stepdaughter, Tiffany; his brother, Rick, and his wife, Sherry; and Meggy, her husband Blake, and their children; as well as countless extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. His life was enriched by the vast relationships he formed, some with well-known individuals who appreciated his genuine nature; equally, he was respected by those less well-known, who found a compassionate and true friend in Larry.
Reflecting his love for animals, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to America's VetDogs (the wonderful organization that provided Larry with his beloved service dog, Xman) or to a local animal sanctuary or shelter.
Larry's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, and soar with the eagles, our dear Larry. Your legacy of love, courage, and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
