Joseph E. "Joe" Chancey

August 28, 1915 — January 19, 2012

Joseph " Joe" E. Chancey passed away on January 19, 2012 at the age of 96. He led a very active, independent and full life. He will be remembered and missed by family and friends. A viewing will be held at Stephens Family Chapel, 1629 Williams Highway, on Thursday, January 26, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a memorial service commencing at 11:00 a.m. It is requested that a donation be made to a charity of your choice, in lieu of flowers. Joe was born August 28, 1915 in San Francisco, CA. and grew up in the Mission District. On July 27, 1941 he married E. Fern Penman in Reno, NV. and they remained married for 63 years; being parted by Fern's passing in 2005. During his working years, he worked for F.M. Ball Cannery, Dole Corporation and Hunts-Wesson Foods. In 1962, at the request of Dole Corp. and after a brief training program in Hawaii , Joe and Fern moved to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, to assist in the construction and management of a pineapple factory and plantation. They loved the experience and would talk of it often. Upon returning to the U.S. Joe worked for Hunts-Wesson Foods in Hayward, CA. where he retired in 1976. Joe and Fern then relocated to Grants Pass, OR. where they remained. Joe especially loved Grants Pass due to its climate and access to elk hunting. He shot his last elk when he was 94. He was also known for his large garden and willingness to provide family and friends with fresh produce, turkeys, eggs and chickens. He also made sure that anyone who visited never left hungry. Joe is preceded in death by his wife, brother David Chancey and sister Mildred Serpa. He is survived by his sons Charles (Cherri) Chancey and Jay (Margaret) Chancey, grandchildren Jay Chancey, Scott (Kelli) Chancey, Ann Marie (David) Riggs, Diana (Jason) Schuldt, Jim (Angie) Despie and eleven great-grandchildren, all residing locally.
