John M. Winschel, 74, of Grants Pass died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his home. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 5:00 â" 7:00 PM at Stephens Family Chapel A funeral Mass St. Anne Catholic Church, Tuesday at 11 a.m., with Father Paschal Ezurike officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. He was born John Martin Winschel to Martin and Anna Winschel on February 5, 1936 in Mandan, North Dakota. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in San Francisco, CA. He serviced in the United States Navy from January 31, 1955 until his honorable discharge on September 30, 1974. John also worked a number of years for Bechtel Power Corp and in Real Estate. He enjoyed singing, dancing, bowling, auto repair, writing and conservative politics. He moved to Grants Pass from Westminster California in 2002. John was a member of the VFW, American legion, Fleet Reserve Association, US Navy Memorial Association and Destroyer Escort Sailor Association. He enjoyed giving contributions to organizations: Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, Young Americans Scholarship, Salasian Sister âMission Sponsorâ and âAdopt-a-sister Programâ, and the Destroyer Escort Sailor Association. Survivors include two daughters, Lauren Marie Leon of Crestline, CA and Audrey Ann Winschel of Lake Arrowhead, CA; two sisters, Evelyn Skorlich of Sonoma, CA and Katherine Krause of San Bruno, CA; five grandchildren.
