James Rex Staggers, Sr., 89, of Merlin passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Highland House Nursing & Rehab. Center in Grants Pass, Oregon. No services are planned. James was born on October 18, 1923 in Lubbock, Texas to James and Oma Staggers. James served in WWII as a Staff Sergeant for 4 years. He was also the recipient of a Purple Heart for being wounded in France during WWII. On January 29, 1944 he married Betty Lou Hassell in Clarksville, Tennessee. They were married for over 69 years. He received his Business Degree from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN and a Master Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville. He worked as a school teacher and was a principle at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and also at one of the largest elementary schools in Tennessee. He continued his teaching career and moved to Stockton, California in 1967. In 1989 he moved to Oregon from Lodi, California. He was a past member of the American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club and Junior Chamber of Commerce. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and garage sales. In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter's, Betty Poole of California, Sally Barnes and her husband, Roger of Loveland, Colorado, Susie Griess and her husband, Dave of Merlin, Oregon; son, James Rex Staggers Jr. and his wife, Geri of Greeley, Colorado; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 3 sister's.
