Helen was the oldest of three children born to Lionel and Helen Leslie. She graduated from the University of Maine as a Registered Nurse in 1944. Helen served one year in the United States navy during WWII, where she met her husband, George. Upon honorable discharge, she worked at Bostonâs Childrenâs Hospital before she included the role of mother to her accomplishments. Helen and George were married on April 6, 1951 in Newport, Rhode Island. She was loved and adored by her eight children and their spouses: Charlotte A. Snell, George E. Smith and his wife Barbara, Deborah J. Rubera, Jeffery A. Smith and his wife Sharon, Cheryl G. Hodgson and her husband Roscoe, Timothy L. Smith and his wife Cora, James E. Smith and Andrew D. Smith. Sister Constance Leslie. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and spouses: Eric, Sean, Paul, Brian and Faye, Jeremiah and Stephanie, Wesley and Dalia, Melissa, Jennifer and Clint, Patrick, William, Vincent, Matthew, Ashley, and James and 5 great-grandchildren. Helen pursued many hobbies including gardening, painting, fiber crafts and reading. She and George have traveled widely, crossing the United States several times, visiting many national parks, Washington D.C. and most recently the state of Alaska; usually traveling with younger family members. Helen will be buried at her ancestral home, Deer Island, Canada. She will be greatly missed by all.
