Hazel Mae Cross

Hazel Mae (Bowman) Cross, 81, of Grants Pass died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at her home. No services are planned at this time. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1200 N.W. Naito Parkway, Suite 220, Portland, OR 97209; or to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 400, Kansas City, MO 64114. Cross was born July 1, 1926, in Richmond, Calif., to Heber "Charlie" and Nellie Bowman. She graduated from Richmond High School and Armstrong Business College in Berkeley, Calif. During World War II, she worked part-time as a typist at Kaiser Shipping. After graduating, she became a medical secretary for physicians in the San Francisco area. In 1950, she met and married Mervin Alden Cross, who died in 1986. While living in Seattle, she worked as a medical secretary for physicians in that area. When her first son was born, she quit work to become a full-time homemaker. After her husband joined the U.S. National Park Service, they lived in several parts of the country, including Yosemite National Park and Gettysburg National Battlefield. She moved to Grants Pass in 1986. She enjoyed her home, visiting family and friends, watching deer in her back yard and the view of the mountains. Survivors include two sons, Clark A. Cross of Grants Pass, and Dr. Glenn A. Cross of Herndon, Va.; and two granddaughters.
