He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Mora of Weed, CA, and preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Rosette of San Mateo, CA. George and Meredith lived in Grants Pass for 17 years and were married for 60 years. George was born on March 18, 1927, in San Francisco to Rufus and Veda Steele and grew up in Burlingame, California. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. He attended San Mateo Junior College and completed a B.S. in Bioscience at San Jose State College. As a sideline, he remodeled and built homes, including two which were displayed in the Parade of Homes in Hawaii and one on Orcas Island in Washington. In recent years, George worked with family members to update the Steele family genealogy, with the most recent version being published in a book entitled, "The Steeles of Point Ano Nuevo, from 1591 to 2007." He also arranged for historic Steele family documents to be donated to the Stanford University archives. George greatly valued his family, friends and work associates and was very proud of his children, grandchildren, niece, and great niece and nephew. He loved people and he loved life. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held in March at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grants Pass.
