Floyd B. Smashey, 82, of Grants Pass died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Three Rivers Community Hospital. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Park View Cemetery in Manteca, Calif. Contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Humane Society, 429 N.W. Scenic Dr., Grants Pass, OR 97526. He was born May 5, 1927, in Hannibal, Mo., to John and Clara Smashey. He married Masona Sanderson, who died Dec. 17, 2008. They moved to Merlin in 1996 from Stockton, Calif. For many years he was an ironworker. He enjoyed gardening, home improvement, traveling, animals, visiting with family and friends, and reading the Bible. He was a member of River Valley Community Church and Ironworkers Local 378 in Benicia, Calif. Survivors include a son, John Smashey of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Dorval Smashey of Monterey, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Leonda Ferris and Sandra Woods Peck, both of Grants Pass, and Louise McDonald of Poteau, Okla.; two grandchildren, 15 stepgrandchildren, 28 stepgreat-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Janet Schepps, died before him.
