Charles Bryson Houston, 89, of Grants Pass died Thursday, January 9, 2014, at Spring Pointe Memory Care Community. Cause of death was congestive heart failure. He was born Charles Bryson Houston on July 16, 1924 in Fullerton, California to Ruby and Raymond Houston. He spent his early years in Fullerton, California and in 1940, he moved to Grants Pass, Oregon. "Charlie" was a veteran of World War II, where he earned several medals, including the Victory Medal, Good Conduct medal, and commendations for service in the Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns. He served as a forward observer in the U.S. 133rd Field Artillery Battalion of the 36th Texas Division of the 7th Army. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after two years of service. On January 21, 1947, he married Dorothy Marie Johnston in Grants Pass, Oregon. He worked as a millwright for Spalding Lumber Co. for over 30 years. In his early career, he held various positions including landscaper for local Grants Pass residences and businesses, and green-chain puller for Thorpe Lumber. His favorite pastimes were fishing, gardening, and wood carving. In addition to his wife, Dorothy, survivors include his children, Rosemary Rackley, William Houston, and Julie Houston of Grants Pass, Oregon, a sister, Alberta Brazzle of Grants Pass, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother, Louis Houston. A brief memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at Stephens Family Chapel, located at 1629 Williams Hwy, Grants Pass, Oregon 97527. Reception to follow.
