Anna Gloria Modica born on May 17, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA to Frances Gerace and Dorothy Fink Gerace. She was an only child. Anna's Mother left Anna's life when she was only 9 months old. Anna never knew her birth mother. She was raised by her grandma. Anna grew up in a loveless house hold and she grew up very poor. At 18 yrs of age she married Joseph Modica Sr. She bore one son, Joseph Modica Jr. who currently lives in Atascadero, CA. Anna and the two Joseph's moved to California around 1960. In 1964 her daughter, Maria Modica was born. Anna was mostly a stay at home mother. In the 80's before she divorced, Anna went to work for a paper company and then a government company where she preformed background checks on new hires. Anna loved to go country western dancing and she really enjoyed reading and traveling. Anna also volunteered at a food pantry in California where she handed out food to those in need. Sadly, her son kept himself away from the family. Anna and Maria did a lot of traveling and dancing together. In 2008 Anna was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Maria was her sole caregiver for a little over 6 years. In 2011 Anna and Maria became involved in dog rescue. Anna was instrumental in helping the small dogs to feel safe once out of the shelter and on their journey to their new homes. Anna comforted countless dogs and got great joy at knowing she had a large part in helping those dogs live and feel safe. Anna also enjoyed going for long car rides. In late 2012 Anna and Maria along with their 6 dogs moved to Grants Pass. Anna was still involved in dog rescue (although she wasn't fully aware). As Anna's disease progressed, she would still comfort dogs by letting the big ones use her lap as a pillow coming or going to the vet. She offered many pats of comfort and received many kisses from dogs. Some nights her dog, Rosie would sense she wasn't feeling well and insist on sleeping with her. 2 weeks before Anna passed away, our other dog, Brian became her protector and comforter. He knew something was very wrong with Anna and he laid next her for 12 + hours. He made sure that no human or other dog would get next to her. I am sure that Anna felt the comfort that Brian was giving her. In the early evening on February 2, 2015 Anna passed away and is now with God and all her friends and much of her family. I hope she has finally got to meet her birth Mother.
