Albert Jacob Garman "Punky" (Al) 91, passed away peacefully at home on March 4, 2024 in Grants Pass, Oregon. Albert was born October 10,1932 in Balta, North Dakota. Al grew up and worked on his family farm in North Dakota until the mid 1950s when he moved to Los Angeles, CA. He took up residence in a Los Angeles boarding house owned by Dorothy Robinson. This is where he met the love of his life, Dorothy's daughter Pauline, whom he married a few years later. Albert worked in aircraft at Northrop in Los Angeles until the early 1970s. He and Pauline then moved their family to Templeton, CA, where he worked as a diesel mechanic for the Templeton Unified School District until he retired in 1993. After raising a family and retiring, Al and Pauline relocated to Grants Pass, Oregon, where they built a beautiful home on property in the forest.
Albert was known for his love of family, his jovial personality and quirky sense of humor. He loved to laugh and joke during his many get togethers with family and friends. Al was very mechanically inclined and could fix practically anything. He loved to work on and maintain vehicles and especially loved his tractor. His all time favorite thing to do was work on his property with his tractor but he also liked bookkeeping, tracking the weather, burn days, watching wildlife, reading his daily newspaper, playing soduko puzzles, barbecuing and physical fitness. Al took great pride in his health and was extremely fit. He could perform physically demanding tasks that others couldn't do. Throughout his life (even into his 80s) he was known for his fitness, strength and resilience. In his youth, Albert liked to shadow box and arm wrestle anyone who offered to challenge him.
Albert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Andrew Andrade of Grants Pass, OR, granddaughter Kelli Collins (Mick) of Germantown, MD, grandson Michael Andrade (Essence) of Coos Bay, OR, granddaughter Charlee Davis (Alex) of Eagle Point, OR, great grandsons Daniel Davis and Oliver Andrade, great granddaughter Ellie May Davis, sisters Gabriella Garman, Betty Buttle and Barbara Garman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Albert was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Garman, son Michael Garman, son Jerry Garman, parents Mathias and Marion Garman, five brothers, Max, Andrew, Victor, Daniel and Jerome Garman, five sisters, Rosina Schmidt, Margaret Garman, Joann Bosch, Anna Garman and Margaretha (aka Barbara) Garman.
A celebration of life will be held in Albert's memory in Grants Pass, OR at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wounded Warriors Project. Being a fan of beer, Al would be pleased if you cracked one open in remembrance of him.
